Chapter Fourteen
Megan
Bright sunlight pours through my office window. Iâm feeling restless this morning, unsettled by everything thatâs been happening. After a sleepless night spent tossing and turning, I decide to try calling Carter again. But like yesterday, thereâs no answer, his phone is ringing straight to voicemail.
Is he avoiding me, or is he simply swamped with work? The uncertainty gnaws at me. On impulse, I decide to go to his office. Maybe a face-to-face conversation will clear the air, help us figure out how to handle the Tim situation.
Arriving at his office building, the secretary at the front desk greets me with a polite smile. âGood morning, Miss Medina. Mr. Wright is in today. Would you like me to announce you?â
I shake my head. âNo, thank you. Iâll surprise him.â
She nods, understanding the delicate dance of personal and professional boundaries weâre playing. I take the elevator up to his top-floor office, rehearsing in my mind what I want to say to him.
As I step out into the hallway, I nearly collide with Carter, whoâs just stepping out of his office, dressed impeccably in a sharp suit. Heâs clearly on his way out, and the surprise on his face is clear.
âMegan,â he says, a little taken aback. âWhat brings you here?â
âI tried calling,â I start, feeling slightly defensive. âWe need to talk.â
He checks his watch, his expression torn. âI have a meeting,â he begins, but I cut him off.
âCancel it,â I suggest, trying to sound more confident than I feel. âHave lunch with me instead. Itâll make us look good,â I add quickly, though secretly, I just want to spend time with him, clear the air.
He hesitates for a moment, then nods. âAlright. Letâs do it.â
We head toward the elevator. The silence that falls between us is thick with unspoken words and lingering tension. I glance at him, trying to gauge his thoughts, but his expression is unreadable.
We wait for the elevator together, standing in silence as the numbers tick by. Twelfth floor, thirteenth, top floor⦠then it dings and we step in. Itâs only us.
The elevator hums as it descends, the numbers on the panel counting down the floors. Just as Iâm about to attempt some small talk, the elevator shudders violently, causing us both to grab onto the handrails. Then, with a jarring halt, it stops on the tenth floor.
Carter immediately starts pressing buttons, but the elevator remains stubbornly immobile. His jaw clenches in clear frustration. He hits the emergency button, but still, thereâs no response.
âGreat,â I mutter, reaching for my phone to call for help, only to realize itâs not there. âI mustâve left my phone in the car.â
Carterâs frustration is palpable as he leans against the wall of the elevator. âThis is just what we needed,â he says dryly.
I try to lighten the mood. âWell, someoneâs bound to notice eventually. Especially if their CEO is missing from an important meeting.â
He doesnât seem to appreciate the attempt at humor. Instead, he just rubs his temples, clearly trying to calm himself.
